fake or feint
- six scenarios on tactics of marking
January 10th to July 25th, 2009
fake or feint is the title of a seven-month exhibition project of contemporary art dealing with the topic of marking. The project took place at two salesrooms in the shopping mall 'Berlin Carré' at Berlin’s Alexanderplatz and at Arsenal Cinema.

Aus dem Konzept:
Das Markieren ist ein physischer Akt, der eine Oberfläche verändert, wie beispielsweise das Sprühen von Graffiti auf eine Wand. So können Differenzen erzeugt oder sichtbar gemacht werden. Für fake or feint bildet der Begriff der Markierung den Ausgangspunkt zur Frage nach einer Politik der Oberflächen und der Wirkungsweise ästhetischer Taktiken. Über die Bedeutung einer bloßen Kennzeichnung von Orten und Identitäten hinaus geht es darum, Markierungen als Handlungen innerhalb eines beweglichen Geflechts von Elementen zu betrachten.
Zur 2. Ebene:
Eine zweite Ebene im Ausstellungsraum umfasst Elemente eines prozessualen Archivs und Vortragsraums, die sich in variablen Formen der jeweiligen Ausstellungssituation anpassen. Die Gestaltung für diese Ebene übernimmt die Künstlerin Katrin Mayer, deren Arbeit sich mit Fragen von Display und Raum befasst. Sie entwirft ein veränderbares Setting für eine kuratierte und wechselnde Auswahl an Büchern und Textfragmenten auf Abreißblöcken, sowie unter Einsatz der grafischen Elemente, die eine Art „ID“ des Projekts darstellen und die 2. Ebene räumlich markieren. Die Wahl der Materialien folgt einer Logik des Einlagerns (incorporate) in die vorhanden visuellen Setzungen des Raums wie Farben von Boden, Fenster und Säulenverkleidung.

A second level within the exhibition room includes functions of a process-related archive and of a lecture room. The design is developed by artist Katrin Mayer whose work deals with concepts of display and space. She will design a set of mutable forms that adjusts to the respective exhibition situation. This will contain a reference library of relevant literature and illustrative material as well as other media like wall newspapers.

The format of a closed series of exhibitions was intended to create concentrated arrangements (as scenarios) within an overriding context, and their succession was meant to produce a dramaturgy of its own. To examine curatorial, artistic, and theoretical practices in various forms of alternating application and to work out the thematic context of the project. This second level was meant to bring the functions of a process related, visual and textual archive and together with those of a reading room. The early inclusion of the artist Katrin Mayer and the graphic artist Flo Gaertner was essential to working out and implementing the conception, since their collaboration, along with their artistic and graphic design, was meant to encompass the development of the project as a whole along these demands.
